Two weeks ago I moved to Brooklyn, NY. After 14 years in Atlanta, I wanted to discover a new city and see what opportunities arose. From doing summer leadership programs at Columbia University, Interning in college at Bloomberg LP, and my most recent client visits, I already had a taste of the Big Apple, and now it was time for me to get more into the core.

On my previous visits here, I was enchanted by the pace and style of how work was done and I wanted to be a part of this energy, so when my lease was up in Atlanta I made the transition here. As a Blogger, and knowing I’d be afforded a lot less square footage and closet space, I packed only the essentials in three pieces of luggage. To make this process even more efficient I only packed black. The one essential shade that goes with everything.

I always knew that black was a staple color for NYC, but until moving here officially, I didn’t fully understand why. Within a few weeks, this rationale was very clear. Here are a few reasons I gathered:

  • I’ve already said this, but it goes with everything.
  • You’re always on public transportation (and don’t want to draw a lot of attention to yourself or get white dirty).
  • It transitions well from day to night.
  • Slush, rain and snow don’t show on black.
  • Makes any accessory or jewelry look great.

And even besides these reasons, it’s lean, all-purpose and just looks damn good.

While I’m sitting on my laptop typing this, every color and tone I own is locked up in storage in Atlanta. I’ll eventually bring them out of hiding in the Spring, BUT for now, I’m fine with the sleekest shade of them all. Sometimes the biggest color statement you can make is the absence of color altogether, especially when the only thing people see is your coat, because it’s so cold out.

Birthday en Noir (birthday in black) is my toast to NYC and the people that have supported me along this journey. To commemorate this I’m hosting two all-black attire events: a birthday dinner and Whiskey Tasting presented by IW Harper January 25th at STK Meatpacking in NYC, followed by a Brunch Day Party at Atlantis January 29th in ATL presented Veuve Clicquot and Belvedere Vodka. I hope you can join me if you’re going to be in these respective cities.
